Texas Southern University recognizes that spring is a time to flourish and thrive. This was proven at the 2018 Honors Day Convocation. The convocation celebrated and inspired about 3,000 students from the university who earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Smiles and pride was the uniform attire honorees and guests shared. Students were inspired and reminded that they were the exception by being a part of the celebration.

It was a full circle moment for TaKasha Francis who was TSU’s Honors Day Convocation speaker. Francis, attended TSU and the Thurgood Marshall School of Law. She was an honors student while at TSU and visualized starting a speech for the university one day. The message she shared with the students was simple yet powerful.

“Be the exemption people already have a perception of what they think based on how you look where you come from your color the fact that your attending an HBCU in every situation always step in to be the exemption to whatever several types of perception that might actually be there and even if those are not there, are not present just be the exemption for yourself and people who are high achieving who want the best who want to be at the top that’s not everybody” Francis said.

Roman Martin was a student in attendance who appreciated the ceremony.

“It’s a wonderful feeling because most people of color like me; they don’t really get achievements such as this and being recognized for being on the presidents list I feel great to represent my people,” said Martin.

Marcus Bell another student in attendance also felt grateful for the celebration.

“It’s inspiring because with all the hard work I put in its really like a boost that gets me going and continues to drive me to excel for excellence”

The students agreed that being on the Honors List was not easy, it took sacrifice but through that they kept a positive mindset.

“I can never focus on what's gone but I can manage what's here,” said Bell.

The Honors Day Convocation takes place every spring and honors students for their accomplishments during the spring and fall semester.
